1.Prime Minister attends 20th Anniversary Celebration of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit Event

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, attended the function to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. This prestigious event was organized at Science City, Ahmedabad. Incidentally, the city of Ahmedabad has witnessed a remarkable transformation of vibrant Gujarat over the past two decades. The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit was launched two decades ago, on September 28, 2003 under the forward-thinking leadership of the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Narendra Modi. With the passage of 20 years, it has evolved into an internationally recognized event. The event has established itself as one of the premier business summits in India.

2.Sri Lanka faces IMF bailout deal amid ongoing debt restructuring

Sri Lanka is facing delays in receiving the second tranche of its $2.9 billion IMF bailout package due to unresolved external debt restructuring issues. The crisis comes as the country faces the worst economic recession in its history, as the country’s foreign exchange reserves dwindle and public protests escalate over shortages of key commodities. In March this year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) granted Sri Lanka a 48-month extended facility worth $2.9 billion under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The purpose of this extension was to strengthen Sri Lanka’s economic policy and promote necessary reforms.

3.India and UN launch Global Capacity Building Initiative

    In a landmark move, India and the United Nations jointly launched a significant capacity-building initiative known as the “India-UN Capacity Building Initiative”. This initiative is designed to facilitate sharing of India’s development experiences, best practices and expertise with partner countries in the Global South. The initiative was announced during the “India-UN for the Global South-Delivering for Development” event in New York on September 23. The event was attended by dignitaries including External Affairs Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar and President of the 78th General Assembly Dennis Francis.

    4.Manipur Government has extended the period of AFSPA in hill districts by 6 months

    The Manipur government has decided to extend the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in the entire state except for certain areas in the Imphal Valley. The decision was taken in response to the current security situation, particularly in the hill districts inhabited by tribal communities, where ethnic violence and insurgent activities are on the rise. This decision by the government is in stark contrast to the Army’s report to re-impose AFSPA in Valley districts to aid in counter-insurgency efforts. Note that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is a controversial law that gives extensive powers to the armed forces and central security forces in “disturbed areas”. These powers include the power to use force, arrest without warrant and legal immunity from prosecution without the approval of the central government.

    5.Government of Uttarakhand signs an MoU with ropeway construction firm Poma Group in London

    In London, the Uttarakhand government has taken a significant step to boost its tourism and infrastructure sectors by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Poma Group, a renowned French ropeway construction company. It may be noted that this MoU worth Tk 2,000 crore was officially signed by Industries Secretary Vinay Shankar Pandey on behalf of Uttarakhand Government. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who played a key role in facilitating this landmark agreement, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. He emphasized the immense potential of eco-friendly tourism investment in Uttarakhand considering the unique geographical situation of the state. This landmark investment aims to harness the state’s natural beauty and promote responsible tourism.
